Military training jet from Point Mugu crashes in Morro Bay
The pilot ejected after repeated attempts to restart the engine failed, and investigators later found a bearing failure in the high-pressure fuel pump.
- On Tuesday evening shortly before 7 p.m., an MK-58 Hawker Hunter operated by Airborne Tactical Advantage Company crashed into the Pacific Ocean six miles northwest of Morro Bay. A Navy search and rescue helicopter rescued the pilot, who ejected at 3,000 feet and was seriously injured.
- The pilot reported "I've lost thrust" to air traffic control while conducting training exercises off Monterey County. After two unsuccessful attempts to restore engine power, National Transportation Safety Board examination of recovered wreckage revealed a bearing failed in the high-pressure fuel pump.
- Operating under call sign SNAKE4, the aircraft was providing adversary and tactical training for U.S. Navy, Air Force and Marine Corps aircrews when thrust was lost. ATAC describes the Hawker Hunter as enabling use as a transonic fighter in air-to-air roles and a stable platform for air-to-surface operations.
- Coast Guard Southwest District spokesperson Kenneth Wiese urged mariners to navigate with caution and report debris or pollution in the area. Wiese said the jet likely carried about 400 to 1,000 gallons of fuel; Coast Guard crews searched but did not recover wreckage.
- This incident marks the third engine power loss involving ATAC's Hawker Hunter fleet off the California coast, following a 2022 crash about 40 miles southeast of Wilmington, North Carolina, and a Big Sur incident last October. Both prior incidents involved similar power loss events.
