Military leaders warn Hegseth against extending Iran war operations

Military leaders said the campaign has no end date and has cut Navy readiness to about one-quarter of destroyers able to deploy, officials said.

  • In the August 14 Defense Orders Book, top military leaders warned Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth that the ongoing Iran operation is unsustainable and risks weakening the military's ability to confront threats elsewhere.
  • Commanders of the European Command, Pacific Command, and Southern Command joined the Navy's top admiral in issuing a 'non-concur' assessment, meaning they disagreed with extending forces but will execute the order nonetheless.
  • Navy Adm. Daryl Caudle reported that barely one-fourth of the destroyer fleet is ready to deploy, while the Pentagon has lost about 25 percent of its Reaper drone fleet and carriers remained deployed for more than 300 days.
  • The Army's 82nd Airborne Division will remain in the Middle East through September, while many Air Force units conducting around-the-clock operations are slated to stay in the region into 2027.
  • Military leaders characterized the six-month operation as 'too much for too long,' warning that current demands jeopardize ship maintenance and fleet availability should other global conflicts arise.
