Iran, Oman Agree on Hormuz Shipping Route, Await US Commitments

- On Friday, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian announced that Iran and Oman agreed on a shipping route through the Strait of Hormuz, though Tehran will only reopen the waterway if the United States fulfills commitments from the June Islamabad Memorandum.
- Negotiations to manage the waterway began after the memorandum collapsed last month due to United States non-compliance, with Pezeshkian stating Tehran is now working to restore the Strait to its previous status.
- Under the memorandum, Iran previously exported nearly 90 million barrels of oil and prepared for $300 billion in investment, with the Supreme National Security Council reaching an "exceptional" consensus with 12 of 13 members voting in favor.
- According to Pezeshkian, Iran currently faces wartime energy pressures as transport routes remain blocked, causing imports and exports to decline by 25 percent to 35 percent.
- Reopening the Strait depends on Washington meeting several conditions, including lifting sanctions, releasing frozen assets, and ending the war in Lebanon, Pezeshkian stated.
