Microsoft's New Surface Devices Are Faster, Brighter, and More Efficient
Microsoft kept the same designs but raised prices and minimum memory, while promising up to 95% faster local AI inferencing.
- At the Snapdragon Summit in Hawaii, Microsoft announced the Surface Pro 12-inch and Surface Laptop 13-inch, both launching October 13, 2026, powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon X2 Plus chip.
- Corporate Vice President of Surface Devices Brett Ostrum stated the Snapdragon X2 Plus delivers "18 percent more efficient battery performance, over 60 percent faster graphics, and 95 percent faster on-device AI" than predecessors.
- Both devices feature 500-nit displays, 25 percent brighter than previous models, while the Surface Pro 12-inch adds Microsoft Ink Canvas, an AI-powered sketching tool for Windows 11's Copilot.
- Starting at $1,149.99 for the Surface Pro and $1,199 for the Surface Laptop, both machines now include a minimum of 16GB RAM, eliminating the previous 8GB configuration option.
- These updates position Microsoft to compete against new Googlebooks and Apple's MacBook Air, following years when the Surface lineup contracted after discontinuing Surface Go and Surface Studio.
