Microsoft Accidentally Gave Windows 11 Users Another OneDrive App, and You Can’t Easily Remove It

Microsoft says the AI-powered app was shipped beyond its intended audience, and users must remove OneDrive itself to uninstall it for now.

  • Microsoft accidentally rolled out the AI-powered OneDrive Photos app to millions of Windows 11 PCs more broadly than intended, including Enterprise PCs where the software is unsupported.
  • EVP Jeff Teper confirmed the app is an incubation project meant for select testing; the OneDrive sync client automatically downloaded and installed it on PCs without user permission.
  • Users currently cannot remove OneDrive Photos without uninstalling the main OneDrive app, risking broken File Explorer integration and shortcuts; the app accesses local files even without a Microsoft account.
  • Microsoft is working on a future update allowing users to remove OneDrive Photos separately from the main client, while the software will automatically disappear from unsupported Enterprise PCs.
  • Teper added that Microsoft will "always" offer users the option to use local storage instead of OneDrive for photos and videos, though the incident highlights persistent frustration with software installed on Windows without consent.
