Microsoft's Dueling Copilot Apps Have Combined Into a Single Entity
Microsoft is merging its consumer and work Copilot apps, while Podcasts, Group Chat and Deep Research are being removed or shifted to premium tools.
- On Thursday, Microsoft began rolling out a unified Copilot app merging consumer and business versions to make the experience "more cohesive" for all users across devices.
- Jacob Andreou, a former Snap executive who took oversight of Copilot in March, directed the organization in July to focus on "real work" and be optimized for outcomes.
- Effective August 18, Microsoft is removing Podcasts, Group Chat, and Deep Research from the consumer app while retiring the AI blob Mico from core voice experiences, though users should download saved content first.
- Users of Microsoft 365 Copilot "may notice some updates to appearance and navigation" as the app integrates with productivity software, with personal accounts automatically transferring chat history to the updated version.
- Mico joins a long line of retired Microsoft AI characters including Bob, Clippy, and Cortana, reflecting the company's decades-long pattern of introducing and eventually removing experimental features.
