FAA states that the EMAS have been installed at more than 120 airports across the country and are attributed to have helped save at least 497 lives on board aircraft that were passed from the end of the runway.
Beyond the end of the runway, a Boeing 767-300F landed in Miami. Five people died, five others suffered some serious injuries. An investigation of the accident is ongoing.
