Probe begins into why cargo plane overran Miami runway
Federal investigators are examining touchdown timing, braking and wind conditions after the jet overran the runway and killed at least five people.
- An Amazon cargo jet overran the runway at Miami International Airport on Sunday, plowing into a nearby road and killing five people after arriving from San Juan, Puerto Rico.
- Investigators are examining whether the plane touched down too late to stop safely; aviation expert Mary Schiavo noted a tail wind could have contributed to the aircraft floating further down the 3,000-foot landing zone.
- The 32-year-old aircraft was operated by 21 Air, a carrier based in North Carolina, while Miami International Airport lacks FAA-approved arresting systems credited with saving at least 497 lives at more than 120 other airports.
- Some 200 emergency personnel responded to the wreckage, extinguishing flames and managing fuel leaks, while the disruption caused more than 160 flight cancellations and nearly 325 delays by late Sunday.
- The National Transportation Safety Board sent a team led by Chairwoman Jennifer Homendy to Miami, where she is expected to provide the agency's first briefing on the investigation on Monday.
