Brits Warned over Dangerous ‘Fake’ Eclipse Glasses Ahead of Wednesday

Experts say only ISO 12312-2 certified glasses can block harmful rays, as safety-approved pairs have all but sold out online.

  • Ahead of tomorrow's eclipse, safety-certified eclipse glasses have all but sold out online as the Moon prepares to obscure more than 90% of the Sun between 6:17 p.m. and 8:06 p.m.
  • Experts warn that looking directly at the Sun can cause permanent retinal damage, and the retina lacks pain receptors, so injury may go unnoticed as it occurs. Symptoms like blurred vision or dark spots often appear hours later.
  • Kyla Black, Boots Opticians director of optical practice, urged parents to be "particularly careful" with children, warning that DIY filters like smoked glass or X-ray film cannot block harmful rays.
  • Following the 1999 total eclipse, the Royal College of Ophthalmologists reported around 70 cases of vision problems, with around 40% occurring after less than a minute of exposure. Mohamed Elalfy, the college's president, advised observing indirectly.
  • Stargazers have an added bonus as the annual Perseid meteor shower peaks on the night of August 12-13, with dust from Comet Swift-Tuttle striking Earth's atmosphere at about 60 kilometres per second.
