Mahatma Gandhi Manuscript Sells for Record Rs 16.2 Crore at Saffronart Auction
The sale set a new world record for an Indian historical document, with other Gandhi lots also drawing strong bids, Saffronart said.
- A collection of 688 autographed reflections by Mahatma Gandhi, titled 'A Thought for the Day', sold for Rs 16.20 crore at a Saffronart auction, establishing a world record for an Indian historical document.
- Preserved by the Hingorani family for generations, the archive contains personal correspondence and reflections spanning two decades, documenting the friendship between Mahatma Gandhi and close associate Anand T Hingorani.
- The manuscript addresses truth, ahimsa, and the search for God; other significant sales included 'Message on God' for Rs 1.68 crore and Gandhi's 'peti charkha' spinning wheel for Rs 1.02 crore.
- Dinesh Vazirani, co-founder of Saffronart, said the reflections offer "rare insight into how Gandhi lived the principles he advocated publicly," during an auction featuring 86 lots of letters and manuscripts.
- Beyond documenting political events, the collection reveals Gandhi as an individual "who offered counsel, consolation, discipline, and affection to those closest to him," serving as a valuable record of his life and thought.
