Maharashtra imposes minimum 10% water cut in urban, rural local bodies from Oct 16 amid deficient monsoon

Officials said drinking water will be protected as local bodies must cut supply 10% and industries recycle or reuse at least 30% of water.

  • On Monday, the Maharashtra government announced a minimum 10 per cent water cut across all urban and rural local bodies starting October 16, citing deficient monsoon conditions and El Niño impacts.
  • With monsoon falling short, Mahajan's department undertook detailed dam-wise and use-wise planning of available water stocks up to August 31, 2027, anticipating prolonged water stress from El Niño conditions.
  • Industries have been directed to recycle 30 per cent of water, while authorities will conduct joint patrols to seize illegal extraction equipment from dams and rivers; local bodies must prevent leakage and use treated wastewater for gardening and construction.
  • Last month, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis declared 265 of 358 talukas drought-affected and announced relief measures including crop loan restructuring, land revenue concessions and deferment of agricultural loan recoveries.
  • Water for drinking will be reserved through August 31, 2027, after accounting for evaporation and silt, with a 10 per cent emergency buffer maintained in every dam; Rabi foodgrains and fodder receive irrigation priority over perennial crops.
