Fort Hood Shooting Survivors Say They Oppose the Shooter's Execution Being Made Public, Livestreamed
Families of Fort Hood victims say a public livestream would reopen trauma as the Pentagon prepares to carry out Hasan’s death sentence.
- Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth announced last week the Pentagon will livestream the December 3 firing-squad execution of Nidal Hasan, the former Army psychiatrist convicted in the 2009 Fort Hood shooting.
- Hasan opened fire at the Texas base on November 5, 2009, killing 13 people and wounding 32 others. A military court sentenced the former psychiatrist to death in 2013.
- Keely Cahill Vanacker, daughter of a victim, called the livestream 'the worst thing you can do,' arguing it turns tragedy into entertainment. Survivor Alonzo Lunsford questioned why those with no connection to the shooting should watch.
- President Donald Trump initially endorsed the plan, telling reporters 'by showing it, maybe other people won't do what he did,' but has since expressed doubts. Republican Rep. Michael Baumgartner opposed it.
- America has not held a public execution in nearly 100 years, with the last high-profile instance in 1936. This would mark the first U.S. military firing squad execution since World War II.
