Florida to Execute a Prisoner Who Killed His Cellmate in Hopes of Getting a Death Sentence
Robertson pleaded guilty and waived appeals after telling investigators he killed his cellmate to get a death sentence.
On Tuesday, inmate James Robertson, 63, is set to be executed at Florida State Prison near Starke for the 2008 strangling of his cellmate, Frank Hart. Robertson pleaded guilty and waived all appeals.
Robertson told investigators he killed Hart to secure a transfer to death row, preferring execution to life in prison. He committed the unprovoked 2008 attack while already incarcerated.
Florida has carried out more than half of the 30 total U.S. executions this year. Robertson's death would mark the state's 17th execution of 2026.
Governor Ron DeSantis withdrew a death warrant last week for William Lee Thompson without providing a specific reason. Thompson remains on death row, though a new warrant could be signed later.
If upcoming executions of William Reaves and Jesse Guardado proceed as planned, Florida will match its 2025 total of 19 executions. Two more inmates are already scheduled for death.
