Police line streets for funeral of PC Matthew Blades killed in A66 crash
Hundreds of officers lined the route as tributes honored the armed response officer killed in a wrong-way crash that also claimed six other lives.
- Hundreds of police officers lined the streets of Hartlepool on Wednesday for the ceremonial funeral of PC Matthew Blades, the 37-year-old armed response officer killed in a head-on collision on the A66 last month.
- Blades and his colleague, 38-year-old PC Tom Clough, died on August 22 when their marked vehicle collided head-on with a Volkswagen Passat traveling the wrong way; five young men in the Passat also died at the scene.
- Public support has been "overwhelming," Cleveland Police Federation chair Lauren Somerville said, with more than £1.2 million raised for the families of the two officers.
- Separately, police arrested a 39-year-old man at Teesside Crematorium on Wednesday following reports of a disturbance during the funeral of 17-year-old Cole Worthy, one of the crash victims; the service resumed shortly after.
- Redcar and Cleveland MP Anna Turley attended the funeral, calling the tribute "powerful," as the service occurred on Emergency Services Day, a national day of remembrance for those who died in the line of duty.
