King and Queen join Highland games fans at Braemar Gathering

The annual event drew spectators from around the world and featured tug-of-war, caber tossing and pipe bands, officials said.

  • On Saturday, King Charles III and Queen Camilla attended the annual Braemar Gathering in Aberdeenshire, joining cheering crowds at the Princess Royal and Duke of Fife Memorial Park near their summer residence at Balmoral.
  • Braemar has hosted the Games in its current form for nearly 200 years, with reigning monarchs attending regularly since Queen Victoria's first visit in 1848. The Gathering remains a cornerstone of Highland culture and tradition.
  • Spectators watched traditional contests including tug-of-war, caber tossing, and Highland dancing, while 11-year-old Highland dancer Ally Dey presented the Queen with a heather posy. Pipe bands also performed throughout the event.
  • Compere Robert Lovie welcomed the royals, stating, "We are greatly honoured that your majesties have graced us with your presence today," as the couple joined special guests in the pavilion to observe the spectacle.
  • The royals' attendance precedes a scheduled meeting with Prime Minister Andy Burnham at Balmoral later today. This marks the third Games the King has attended since his coronation.
