Welsh Rider Josh Tarling to Race Spanish Vuelta a Week After Death of His Brother Finlay
Tarling returns as a time trial specialist while the team supports his decision to race and a fundraiser grows in Finlay’s name.
Netcompany-Ineos confirmed on Thursday that Josh Tarling will start the Vuelta a España, just days after his brother Finlay Tarling's death; the team announced its roster only two days before the opening stage in Monaco.
Finlay Tarling died last Friday during stage 8 of the Volta a Portugal after being struck by a vehicle that leaked onto the race course; Josh had initially been expected to withdraw but remains in the team's eight-man lineup.
Geraint Thomas, Netcompany-Ineos Director of Racing, stated, "It goes without saying that, as a team, we all fully support Josh in his decision to take part in the race." Thomas emphasized organizational backing for Tarling.
Josh Tarling, a strong time trialist with European and British titles, will target the race's two individual time trials: this Saturday's 9.4km test in Monaco and the 32.1km race on stage 18.
The Netcompany-Ineos squad is led by Oscar Onley, who aims to finish the Grand Tour season strongly. Director Thomas expressed confidence in the team's ability to adapt over the next three weeks at the Vuelta.
Joshua Tarling will appear at the start of the Vuelta this Saturday for Netcompany INEOS. His participation remained uncertain for a while following the death of his younger brother Finlay last week.
