Galaxy Z Fold 8 vs. iPhone Duo: Which to Buy?
Apple enters the foldable-phone market with a device built to cut creasing and stress, as foldables held about 1.5% of smartphones in 2024, TrendForce said.
- Apple unveiled the iPhone Duo, its first foldable smartphone, joining competitors Samsung, Google, and Motorola. Pre-orders begin September 12 at 5:00 a.m. PT.
- To address screen creasing common in foldables, Apple engineer and chief hardware officer Johny Srougi highlighted the iPhone Duo's matte inner display and custom adhesives that allow layers to glide relative to one another.
- While the Galaxy Z Fold 8 is lighter and thinner, buyers will likely appreciate how "solid" the iPhone Duo feels in hand thanks to its added heft.
- According to a 2025 CNET survey, consumer interest remains mixed: 64% of respondents were unwilling to buy a foldable smartphone in the next year, while 13% expressed interest.
- Foldable phones accounted for about 1.5% of the smartphone market in 2024, according to TrendForce, positioning Apple's entry within a relatively small industry segment despite the company's scale.
