International rinks earn curling Prestige in B.C.
The wins sent both rinks to the Grand Slam of Curling’s Co-Op Invitational, and 48 teams entered the tournament, organizers said.
On Monday, Oct. 5, Marco Hoesli of Switzerland captured the men's title at the Prestige Classic in Vernon, rallying from an early 4-0 deficit to defeat Japan's Tsuyoshi Yamaguchi 7-6 in an extra end.
Eunji Gim of Korea secured the women's championship on Sunday, defeating Japan's Yuina Miura 5-2, while 48 rinks participated across two draws with all playoff teams earning tournament cash.
Trailing 4-0 early in the final, Hoesli and teammate Philipp Hoesli recovered by scoring back-to-back deuces in the sixth and seventh ends, while Yamaguchi's team with skip Riku Yanagisaw forced the extra end.
Coach Bob Ursel guided Japan's squad to the final after victories over Victoria's Matthew and Korea's JaeBom Lee, while Tyler Tardi of Cloverdale skipped the Green Machines of Saskatoon to a semifinal finish.
Both Hoesli and Gim qualified for the Grand Slam's Co-Op Invitational scheduled for Oct. 13 to 18 in Victoria, as the Vernon event served as a satellite bonspiel for the prestigious series.
