Justice minister to announce next steps for MAID in Canada
The minister will outline the federal response after a committee urged Ottawa to pause MAID expansion for people with mental disorders.
On Wednesday, Justice Minister Sean Fraser will announce Canada's long-awaited decision on the next steps for medical assistance in dying.
A parliamentary committee recommended in June that the government "indefinitely pause" expanding MAID to individuals with mental disorders, prompting the federal government's upcoming announcement.
Since 2021, a temporary exclusion for people suffering solely from a mental illness has been in place; the government repeatedly extended it, most recently until March.
This announcement marks the first time the federal government will communicate its intended direction on MAID's mental health expansion since the committee's June recommendation.
When originally passed in 2016, MAID legislation required a reasonably foreseeable death; the government revised the law in 2021 to include those suffering intolerably from serious, incurable illnesses or disabilities.
