Instagram’s New Editing Tool ‘First Draft’ Turns Your Clips Into a Reel in Seconds
The feature gives creators an editable first cut in under 10 seconds and can reduce nearly five minutes of footage to a short Reel, Instagram said.
- On Tuesday, Instagram launched First Draft, a new one-tap editing tool that automatically trims video clips and removes pauses to assemble a fully edited Reel in under 10 seconds.
- Instagram developed the feature because manual clip trimming can be "tedious and frustrating" for creators, providing a "starting point" to help them focus on creativity rather than technical production.
- Unlike competitors Adobe Firefly and CapCut, which offer similar automated editing capabilities using artificial intelligence, Instagram confirmed First Draft does not utilize AI technology.
- Available exclusively on iOS devices for now, users can access First Draft from the camera or Reels gallery and retain full control to reorder, remove, or adjust the automatically assembled draft.
- This launch follows other 2026 creator tools like Replace Audio and Series, positioning First Draft as a streamlined complement to Instagram's standalone Edits app, which offers more advanced frame-accurate editing features.
