WhatsApp Adds Stronger Two-Step Verification, Multiple Passkeys
Users can now set stronger two-step verification, add multiple passkeys and see more details on unknown callers as phishing risks rise, WhatsApp said.
- On Tuesday, Meta announced new security updates for WhatsApp, including stronger two-step verification and the ability to add multiple Passkeys to a single Account, alongside features for handling calls from unknown numbers.
- WhatsApp is replacing the traditional six-digit PIN with stronger alphanumeric passwords containing special characters, addressing sophisticated phishing and hacking attempts that have intensified in recent years.
- More than 1 billion users have already created a Passkey for their accounts, which allows identity verification using device security like Face ID or fingerprints rather than passwords or PINs.
- Additionally, Android users now receive more context when receiving calls from non-contacts, such as whether the caller's number originates from another country or if they share WhatsApp groups together.
- Users can manage these new security options by navigating to Settings, Account, and Passkeys, which facilitates more secure logins across multiple devices including separate Passkeys for Android and iOS.
