Black Hawk County Man Arrested and Charged with Murder of Grandfather, Sheriff’s Office Says
Authorities say 21-year-old Eric Paul O'Connell II confessed to killing his grandfather, and deputies found signs of a struggle inside the home.
- On Saturday, deputies arrested 21-year-old Eric Paul O'Connell II after discovering his 75-year-old grandfather, Gale Anthony Mervin, dead at their rural Waterloo home on Elk Run Road.
- Deputies responding to an unknown problem at 137 S. Elk Run Road around 8:40 p.m. Saturday found signs of a struggle inside the residence and discovered O'Connell hiding in another room.
- Following a medical evaluation at Unity Point Allen Hospital, O'Connell reportedly confessed to officers he killed Mervin, according to the Black Hawk County Sheriff's Office.
- O'Connell remains in custody at the Black Hawk County Jail, facing a first-degree murder charge, a Class A felony, in connection with his grandfather's death.
- The Black Hawk County Sheriff's Office led the investigation with assistance from the Waterloo Fire Department, the Black Hawk County Conservation Department, and the Black Hawk County Consolidated Communications Center.
