Edgewing Opens First GCAP Engineering Site in Turin
The site will support advanced concept and assessment work and bring engineers from the UK, Italy and Japan into the program.
- Edgewing inaugurated its new engineering site in Turin, Italy, marking the first additional facility to open since the joint venture established its headquarters in Reading, United Kingdom, last year.
- Operating as the industrial lead for the GCAP aircraft, Edgewing is owned equally by BAE Systems, Leonardo, and Japan Aircraft Industrial Enhancement, and signed international contracts exceeding €6 billion this year.
- Engineers from all three partner nations will staff the Turin facility, with some secondees relocating as far as 10,000 kilometres from Japan to Italy. General Manager Giuseppe Lupoli said the site offers 'an opportunity for many to join Edgewing and work on some of the world's most advanced digitally-driven engineering.'
- CEO Marco Zoff said the Turin site represents 'the latest step in Edgewing's rapid growth as an organisation,' as the facility leverages Leonardo's combat air research to accelerate development toward the 2035 in-service date.
- Designed with AI support and advanced stealth technology, the fighter jet will replace the Royal Air Force Typhoon and Japanese F-2, with Edgewing currently managing the programme's concept phase before transitioning to full design and development.
