James, Komatireddy Clash Over Cornell Case in NY1 AG Debate
Komatireddy accused James of prejudging the Cornell rape investigation after Hochul named her special prosecutor, and James said the case needs an unbiased review.
- Incumbent New York Attorney General Letitia James and Republican Saritha Komatireddy debated on Thursday night with the Cornell 7 rape allegations dominating the contentious race ahead of the Nov. 3 election.
- Governor Kathy Hochul appointed James as special prosecutor in the Cornell University rape case last week, sparking criticism from legal experts questioning her impartiality due to prior public comments supporting the alleged victim.
- Komatireddy, a federal prosecutor, attacked James's credentials, stating, 'She's never prosecuted a criminal case in her whole career. She's certainly never prosecuted a sexual assault case. And she's already screwed this one up by prejudging it.'
- James defended her record, arguing that her remarks demonstrated empathy and accusing Komatireddy of 'auditioning for another position' while refusing to criticize the administration.
- The debate marked the candidates' only scheduled meeting before voters head to the polls, leaving sharp disagreements over the Attorney General role to define the final weeks of the high-stakes race.
