Fundraiser for two police officers killed in A66 crash raises £1.25m

The appeal drew 44,000 donors and will divide the proceeds equally between the officers' families, organizers said.

  • A fundraising appeal for the families of PCs Matthew Blades and Tom Clough closed on Tuesday morning after raising £1,203,932, according to the Cleveland Police Federation. The campaign supported relatives of the two officers killed in an A66 crash.
  • On August 22, seven people died in a collision near Teesside on the A66 involving a marked police vehicle and a Volkswagen Passat travelling the wrong way. The crash claimed both officers and five other individuals at the scene.
  • More than 44,000 people donated before the fundraiser closed. Organiser Carl Baker described the public response as "truly overwhelming," saying the kindness shown "has meant an enormous amount."
  • Funds will be split equally between the two families. Middlesbrough paid tribute on Saturday when the sons of Blades served as mascots during the Championship match against West Bromwich Albion.
  • Clough's family described him as a hero who was "always on public duty," while Blades' wife called her husband "our superhero." The Cleveland Police Federation continues providing support to both grieving families.
