Cornell Case Becomes Latest Flashpoint in America’s Debate over Campus Sexual Assault
The student paper said it wanted transparency and accountability as the lawsuit drew fresh attention to campus sexual-assault complaints.
- On Sept. 16, a lawsuit filed in New York County Supreme Court alleged that seven Cornell University fraternity members sexually assaulted a 20-year-old sorority member during a drug-fueled encounter in fall 2024. The filing sparked national outrage.
- Following the filing, furious onlookers demanded accountability on social media, circulating identifying details of the fraternity members. A Snapchat screenshot in the lawsuit showed one man wrote "free p*ssy" with others responding "CHI PHIII."
- Attorneys for two of the seven alleged assailants denied the claims, arguing the encounter did not qualify as a crime under New York law. Tomkins County District Attorney Matthew Van Houten announced he will reopen the case.
- Actress Sasha Pieterse, a survivor of sexual assault, told CNN she hopes the Cornell spotlight helps victims feel less alone. She said people must "understand the gravity of what happens around the aftermath: the fear, the shame."
- Trump officials recently reversed Biden-era Title IX protections amid a backlash to the Me Too movement. Emma Grasso Levine of Advocates for Youth warned the move "sends a message that it's not safe to speak out.
