Ukraine will 'never' join NATO, ex-commander Zaluzhnyi says
Zaluzhnyi said Ukraine lacks the military standards for entry and that NATO may need about 12 years to modernize, according to remarks in Kyiv.
- On Monday, Ukraine's ambassador to Britain, Valerii Zaluzhnyi, told a meeting of ambassadors in Kyiv that the country has no prospect of joining NATO, contradicting the constitutional goal enshrined in Ukraine's founding documents.
- Describing the military obstacle, Zaluzhnyi claimed it is "an organization that holds the doctrines of the Second World War," arguing the country's current development level makes alliance membership impossible.
- Regarding integration timelines, he stressed it will take about 12 years to reach standards matching half the Russian Federation's level, acknowledging "Ukraine needs technologies that are currently still held by NATO countries."
- Despite this assessment, Ukraine's official policy remains the constitutional Euro-Atlantic course, as the ambassador's remarks were delivered as a personal assessment during diplomatic discussion rather than official government position.
- President Volodymyr Zelenskyy dismissed Zaluzhnyi as top commander last year over differences on conducting the war with Russia, now well into its fifth year.
