Ukraine repatriates 261 bodies that Russia claims belong to Ukrainian soldiers
Ukrainian investigators and forensic experts will identify the remains as the repatriation continues one of the few humanitarian channels with Russia.
On Thursday, August 13, 2026, Ukraine repatriated 261 bodies that Russia claims belong to Ukrainian service members, according to The Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War.
This latest operation follows a July 16 exchange of 501 bodies, continuing rare humanitarian cooperation between Ukraine and Russia amid the War.
Due to explosive devices discovered in previously returned bodies, Ukrainian investigators now perform mandatory safety checks before conducting identification procedures on the remains.
The International Committee of the Red Cross facilitated the transfer, while the Armed Forces and Interior Ministry transported remains to state institutions for forensic examination and identification.
Ukrainian officials allege Russia has previously returned its own soldiers to Kyiv, claiming the practice may be an attempt to avoid compensation payments to families or reflects a negligent attitude toward their own people.
