A66 Crash: Family Questions Police Pursuit as Seven Killed Near Middlesbrough
Twelve people have been arrested as investigators probe links to serious and organised criminal activity before the fatal collision.
- Seven people died on Saturday, August 22, in a collision on the A66 in South Bank after a Volkswagen Passat travelling against traffic struck a marked police vehicle, killing two officers.
- Cleveland Police initiated the pursuit after identifying the vehicle, which reportedly displayed cloned plates and had "significant links to serious and organised criminal activity," Assistant Chief Constable Wayne Fox said.
- The two officers were Matthew Blades, 37, and Tom Clough, 38. Five car occupants also died: Cole Robert Worthy, 17, Theo Rae, 17, Makai Saddington, 18, and Michael Robert Cahill and Jacob Matusiak, both 23.
- A fundraiser organized by Cleveland Police Federation has raised more than £600,000 to support grieving families, while tributes from the community and fellow officers have poured in for the two deceased policemen.
- Twelve people aged 19 to 61 have been arrested as part of the investigation into events preceding the crash, while relatives of the victims publicly stated they "want answers" regarding the incident.
