Emergency help was delayed by confusion after failed execution of Christa Pike, 911 calls reveal
911 recordings show prison officials waited more than 30 minutes to confirm the emergency call after the lethal injection failed.
On Monday, the Metro Nashville Emergency Communications Center released a transcript showing that confusion among first responders and prison officials delayed emergency help following Christa Pike's failed execution on Sept. 30 at Riverbend Maximum Security Institution.
State officials administered two doses of pentobarbital that were supposed to be lethal, but witnesses reported the drugs failed to have the intended effect, producing only what one witness described as "heavy snoring."
Pike's attorneys announced on Saturday that she was released from the hospital and returned to the Deborah K. Johnson Rehabilitation Center, where attorney Randy Spivey said she faces a "long road to recovery."
Pike is the only woman on death row in Tennessee, sentenced for the 1995 "Jobs Corps Murder" of 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer, a crime former Knoxville Police Chief Phil Keith described as "an incredibly grotesque" scene.
While Keith argues Pike's moral values were set long ago, friend Misty Armstrong claims Pike spent years in prison reforming and helping other inmates, highlighting the ongoing debate over her character.
