Castagna Picks up Assist in NHL Debut but Flames Fall to Avalanche
Castagna earned his first NHL point and played more than nine minutes as the Flames were outscored 7-3 and fell to 0-4-0.
On Thursday night, 21-year-old centre Jonathan Castagna made his NHL debut for the winless Calgary Flames, recording an assist despite a 7-3 loss to the Colorado Avalanche that dropped the team to a league-worst 0-4-0 record.
The Flames' decision on Monday to waive Connor Zary and Brayden Pachal enabled the recall of Castagna and fellow rookie Aydar Suniev during the team's rebuilding year ahead of their arena move.
With his family in attendance, Castagna won all three faceoffs and recorded three hits and a blocked shot in over nine minutes of ice time, earning his first NHL point by winning a wall battle that set up Adam Klapka's goal.
Flames captain Mikael Backlund praised Castagna's composure, saying he "played well, brought some energy," while head coach Ryan Huska emphasized that facing elite competition "can be a good thing" for a young player.
The Flames, outscored 23-6 through four games, will attempt their first win on Saturday against the Anaheim Ducks, with Backlund stressing the need to "find a way to play really solid 60" minutes.
