First look: Woollahra long-term housing transformation
The draft plan includes towers up to 34 storeys, seven new parks and affordable housing contributions as the government seeks to ease Sydney’s housing shortage.
- On Tuesday, New South Wales Labor released a rezoning plan for Woollahra and Edgecliff featuring 9,400 new homes with towers reaching 34 storeys and a new train station opening in 2029.
- Minister for Planning and Public Spaces Paul Scully said the plan helps rectify population shrinkage by making the most of existing infrastructure and supporting housing supply consistent with the Sydney Plan.
- Developers must pay a Transport Project Component contribution of $15,000 per dwelling within 800 metres of the new station, which will connect commuters to Sydney CBD in eight minutes once operational.
- Mayor Sarah Dixson described the plan as a 'dystopian nightmare in waiting,' while Deputy Mayor Sean Carmichael criticized his own council's alternative 3,600-home proposal as inadequate for Sydney's housing crisis.
- The draft proposal remains on public exhibition until October 7, 2026, with community feedback accepted via the NSW Planning Portal and drop-in sessions at The Lawns of Double Bay starting September 17.
