EZ Vane Outlines Eagle Weathervane Considerations for Placement, Materials, and Installation
The manufacturer says copper and stainless steel offer the best durability, while proper mounting helps the vane track wind accurately for years.
EZ Vane, a family-owned manufacturer in Syracuse, Indiana, released guidance on cardinal weathervane selection and placement yesterday. The company advises homeowners to consider scale, finish, and positioning to ensure the figure enhances yard aesthetics.
The cardinal design remains popular because it does not migrate, offering year-round visibility in the same yards from January through June. EZ Vane notes this consistency provides 'winter interest' during four or five months when nothing is blooming.
Painted aluminum maintains the bird's red color, though the company warns that red pigments fade quickly under ultraviolet light, requiring high-quality, baked-on finishes. Traditional copper develops a green patina over five to twenty years.
Roof-Mounted vanes serve as terminal points against the sky, while post-mounted garden vanes sit near eye level and function like sculpture. The manufacturer cautions that improper anchoring or ignoring scale can cause designs to look like 'indistinct blobs' from a distance.
Designers suggest pairing the vane with plantings that echo the cardinal's color, such as winterberry or red twig dogwood, rather than using excessive matching accessories. Proper installation ensures the piece remains a lasting design choice that enhances property character.
