Trump picks new chair for agency overseeing ballroom, arch construction
Paoletta will oversee White House construction plans as Trump pushes a ballroom, a 250-foot arch and other beautification projects despite legal challenges.
- On Thursday, President Donald Trump appointed Mark Paoletta as chairman of the National Capital Planning Commission to oversee the White House ballroom and a 250-foot triumphal arch in Washington.
- Paoletta, whom Trump once deemed a "conservative warrior," replaces Will Scharf, who transitions to White House counsel on Sept. 1 after serving as a deputy to Budget Director Russell Vought.
- The NCPC "provides overall planning guidance for federal land and buildings in the region," managing projects including the White House ballroom that faced setbacks like botched renovations to the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool.
- Last week, Supreme Court Justice John Roberts temporarily blocked a lower court ruling stopping the project, while The Interior Department has spent nearly $95 million on renovations since December 2025.
- Paoletta said he was "honored" by the appointment, aiming to further the president's "historic restoration and beautification" of the National Capital Region in the 250th year of the country's independence.
