- On Wednesday, District Judge Myong Joun blocked President Trump's administration from restructuring a federal grant program, preventing the redirection of funds away from over 100 non-profit organizations that historically investigate housing discrimination.
- HUD planned to use $46 million of the $56 million Congress appropriated for just five grants, with $25 million directed to a law school and $10 million to state or local agencies, leaving over 100 established fair housing organizations without typical support.
- Imposing controversial requirements, the administration demanded that recipients not use funding to support "gender ideology" or "illegal immigration." Joun wrote that the agency's "pithy description falls woefully short of the mark in both form and substance."
- Challenging the changes, the National Fair Housing Alliance and the Massachusetts Fair Housing Center sued in July to block the restructuring. Lawyers for the groups noted HUD previously awarded over 100 grants ranging from $75,000 to $425,000.
- Appointed by Democratic President Joe Biden, Joun ruled the agency failed to provide a reasoned explanation for implementing "sweeping changes" to the Fair Housing Initiatives Program, which Congress created in 1987.
