Ex-Met police officer Mark Tyrrell, accused of raping sleeping woman, was trained in dealing with sex offence victims, court hears
Tyrrell, 57, is accused of repeated abuse over two years and has admitted misconduct in public office and perverting the course of justice.
On Tuesday, Southwark Crown Court heard the trial of former Metropolitan Police officer Mark Tyrrell, who faces two counts of rape, 11 counts of sexual assault, and four counts of assault by penetration against one woman.
Officers discovered Tyrrell, from Kirklees, hiding by the victim's bed during a separate visit, supporting allegations he abused his position of authority; the woman testified she woke to find him assaulting her after refusing sexual contact.
Prosecutor Catherine Farrelly noted Tyrrell was trained in Sexual Offences Investigation Techniques , yet he allegedly told the woman, "do you realise that what I've just done, that was rape?" while claiming she was "not her type."
While Tyrrell denies the sexual offense charges, he has pleaded guilty to perverting the course of justice by persuading the woman to lie; the victim feared she would not be believed because he was a police officer.
Tyrrell also admitted to misconduct in a public office, maintaining he never had sexual intercourse with the woman, as the trial at Southwark Crown Court continues with prosecution evidence.
