Inquiry to be held into death of paedophile ex-football coach Kenneth Divers who was extradited from Vietnam
The inquiry will examine how Kenneth Divers died in custody and whether safeguards could have reduced the risk of similar deaths.
The Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service announced a mandatory Fatal Accident Inquiry into the death of prisoner Kenneth Divers, who died at the Glasgow Royal Infirmary last year while serving a five-year sentence.
Divers, a former Celtic scout, was jailed in 2023 for sexually abusing boys as young as 11, having fled to Vietnam before his eventual extradition to Scotland to face trial.
Sheriff Brian Mohan slammed the "selfish" pensioner for his actions, noting victims were left mentally scarred; one victim abused between ages 12 and 14 suffered a broken femur after attempting suicide following an encounter at a football match.
A preliminary hearing will take place at Glasgow Sheriff Court on November 25, with Procurator Fiscal Andy Shanks confirming the inquiry is mandatory because Divers died while in legal custody.
Unlike criminal proceedings, the Fatal Accident Inquiry seeks to determine the cause of death and circumstances rather than apportioning blame, aiming to establish if steps could minimize risks of future deaths in similar circumstances.
