Evenepoel Puts Worlds 'Disappointment' to Bed with European Crown
Evenepoel completed his elite championship jersey set after Belgium controlled the race and he beat Giulio Ciccone by photo finish.
- On Sunday, Remco Evenepoel won the European Championships men's road race in Slovenia, outsprinting Italy's Giulio Ciccone in a photo finish with a time of 4:16:37.
- Belgian teammates controlled the peloton throughout the race, disrupting rival squads to support Evenepoel. He recovered quickly after sliding on a corner with 36km remaining, then attacked again four kilometres later with Ciccone following.
- The 196.3km course featured five laps of a circuit with almost 2,500m of vertical ascent, including the steep 2.1km Močjanca climb averaging 10.3%. Italy's Christian Scaroni finished third, 59 seconds behind the pair.
- This victory completes Evenepoel's elite championship jersey collection, a significant milestone after finishing second in the continental road race in 2021 and last year. "It's a big relief to be back on a good level today," Evenepoel added.
- Evenepoel entered as pre-race favorite with defending champion Tadej Pogacar absent due to injury. The title provided redemption after Evenepoel's disappointment at the world championships earlier this month.
