Edward Waters announces it will build first on-campus dorm since 1982
The project includes $25 million in financing and a track and field facility open to students and nearby residents, officials said.
On Thursday, Oct. 8, 2026, Edward Waters University President A. Zachary Faison announced $25 million in financing to build the first on-campus dormitory in 42 years, part of $33 million in capital improvements for the New Town-based campus.
Rice Capital Access Program Chief Executive William Fisher provided the loan, citing Edward Waters' 37% enrollment growth since 2019 and financial responsibility that made the university attractive to lenders despite broader higher education headwinds.
Sam Newby, president of the Edward Waters Alumni Leadership Council, said he was "overjoyed" at the advancement, noting that 42 years have passed since the university last constructed on-campus housing.
Jacksonville Mayor Donna Deegan expects a $2 million city-funded track and field facility to serve as a recreation and exercise hub for Northwest Jacksonville residents, benefiting both students and the surrounding community.
With the new residence facility expected to open in the Fall 2028 semester, these improvements aim to provide additional beds for the university's growing student population at the historic HBCU.
