Nepal Flash Flood Update: At Least 95 Dead and Nearly 400 Missing After Devastating Landslide
Rescue teams recovered 95 bodies as authorities said 341 foreign travelers were missing and an earthquake may have triggered the flood.
- A mudslide on the Nepal and Tibet border triggered catastrophic flooding on Wednesday, killing at least 95 people with hundreds of tourists, soldiers, and police missing across the Himalayan region.
- Planet Labs satellite imagery indicates a landslide of snow and rock triggered the Lhende river flood, Nepal's National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority said. The German Research Centre for Geosciences reported a 4.4 magnitude quake approximately seven minutes before the destruction.
- At least 341 foreign travelers were reported missing, including more than 100 Indians and 12 British nationals. Local media reported 65 people receiving treatment in hospitals across the area and in Kathmandu.
- President Xi Jinping urged all-out search efforts as Chinese authorities deployed 601 personnel and 113 vehicles to the Gyirong Port. Rescuers said roads leading to the border crossing were "completely destroyed" after a preliminary drone inspection.
- Flood alerts were issued for Uttar Pradesh and Bihar in northern India, where several rivers flow down from the mountains. Authorities in Bihar evacuated about 5,000 people from six districts and planned to move up to 12,000 residents as water levels rose.
