DistroKid Confirms It Has Removed Tracks in Response to UMG Claims
DistroKid said a small number of recordings were removed in response to UMG’s lawsuit, and artists reported takedowns without notice.
DistroKid confirmed on Monday it removed a small number of recordings from streaming services in response to claims made by Universal Music Group, though the distributor strongly disputes the allegations underlying the lawsuit.
Universal Music Group filed a lawsuit in September alleging DistroKid floods platforms with 'AI-generated slop' and infringing tracks, claiming the distributor continues distribution even when it knows the tracks infringe rights.
Independent artists including Musician McGwire, Rapper King Chase, and Insane Ian reported their work was removed without notice, with McGwire describing a 'lengthy circular conversation' with a bot before reaching a live agent.
DistroKid's guidance allows artists to 'submit a DMCA-compliant counter-notice,' though streaming services 'may choose not to reinstate content,' while UMG seeks an injunction to remove all infringing tracks from Digital Services.
This legal action follows UMG's 2024 lawsuit against Believe and its TuneCore unit, which sought USD $500 million in damages, as UMG's investigation into DistroKid has identified nearly 2,000 infringing recordings.
