Dire Warning as Measles Outbreak Hits School

Health officials say 24 exposure sites have been listed and a free pop-up clinic is open as contact tracers warn of more possible infections.

  • The measles cluster linked to Brighton Secondary School has risen to five cases, marking South Australia's ninth infection this year, health authorities confirmed on Sunday.
  • Following a student's return from overseas and positive test on September 14, three other pupils contracted the highly infectious virus at the school.
  • Health officials identified 24 exposure sites spanning multiple Adelaide venues including Kmart Westfield Marion and Morphett Vale Stadium, while establishing a temporary vaccination clinic at Brighton Masonic Hall on Friday from 2pm to 6pm.
  • Chief Public Health Officer Nicola Spurrier confirmed contact tracing is underway after a patient spent more than 24 hours in The Queen Elizabeth Hospital emergency department while infectious.
  • Two doses of measles vaccine protect "about 99 per cent of people for life," Professor Spurrier said, urging those born from 1966 onwards to verify their immunisation status.
