Brazil’s Nubank in Talks to Acquire UK’s Monzo – Reports
Monzo’s board is weighing a sale against a new funding round and a stock-market listing as the bank posts 15.2 million customers and £25.7 billion in deposits.
Sky News reported on Saturday that Nubank is in early-stage talks to acquire London-based Monzo, potentially valuing the British digital bank between £8 billion and £10 billion. Neither company has confirmed the talks.
Monzo's board is currently exploring two strategic options: a potential sale to the Brazilian firm or a new funding round supporting expansion into Europe. The bank was valued at £4.5 billion in October 2024.
Nubank, Latin America's largest digital bank, holds a market capitalization of about $65.5 billion and serves more than 110 million customers. Monzo reported 15.2 million customers and £25.7 billion in deposits in its 2026 accounts.
Any acquisition would require approval from British regulators, including the Prudential Regulation Authority and the Financial Conduct Authority. Monzo's shareholders—including Accel, Passion Capital, and CapitalG—must also vote on the sale.
If completed, the deal would represent the largest purchase of a British bank by a Latin American company. Nubank is pursuing an American license, while Monzo has prepared for a potential stock-market listing.
