On 21 September, the Eurosystem launched the Pontes settlement service. It enables banks and other eligible financial institutions to settle tokenized bonds and other securities recorded in this way in central bank money. Pontes connects the distributed ledger systems in which these securities are recorded with the Eurosystem’s TARGET payment services.
The effects of the Pontes system, based on digital tokens (tokens) that allow the settlement of transactions using the currency of central banks, will not be immediate in Romania, but will be transmitted in time through banks, companies and trade flows connected to the euro area, says Claudiu Cazacu, consultant of the strategy XTB Romania. The European Central Bank launched Pontes on September 21, 2026, a live blockchain settlement platform that lets banks settle tokenized securities trades directly in central bank money. Thirteen institutions, including Deutsche Bank, Santander and Clearstream, completed onboarding on day one, with the ECB planning to expand toward round-the-clock service by 2028.
