Detained Ugandan opposition figure is unconscious, in intensive care, his wife says
Winnie Byanyima said the 70-year-old opposition leader is unresponsive in intensive care after collapsing during his treason trial.
- On Wednesday, Ugandan opposition figure Kizza Besigye collapsed during his treason trial in Kampala and is now unconscious in the intensive care unit at Mulago National Referral Hospital, according to UNAIDS Executive Director Winnie Byanyima.
- Besigye has been in custody since November 2024 after being repatriated from Kenya, with supporters and rights activists claiming the treason charges are politically motivated attempts by President Yoweri Museveni to suppress opposition.
- Byanyima stated her husband is "unconscious, unable to speak, and unresponsive even to a pain stimulus," while Ingrid Turinawe noted that Besigye's personal physician was permitted to see him several hours after the collapse.
- Turinawe and others were denied access to Besigye at the hospital, while President Museveni and Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba have publicly alleged he plotted serious offenses against the government.
- Once a trusted ally of Museveni, Besigye later became a fierce critic of the president, condemning what he described as a descent into authoritarianism as Museveni serves a seventh consecutive term in office.
