Chandni Chowk's Historic Town Hall to Become Global Heritage Centre
The project will add a museum, cultural activities and tourism facilities while preserving the complex’s heritage identity, officials said.
- On Sunday, the Delhi government signed an MoU with the MCD to redevelop the historic Town Hall in Chandni Chowk as a Global Heritage Centre, officials said.
- Constructed in the 1860s, the Town Hall served as Municipal Corporation headquarters until 2010, when operations shifted to the Mukherjee Civic Centre, leaving much of the complex largely vacant.
- Under the MoU, the DTTDC will conduct structural surveys for the approximately 12,180 square metres site, with an initial 30-year term extendable by another 30 years through mutual consent.
- Chief Minister Rekha Gupta stated the Delhi government is "committed to preserving its historical and architectural identity while connecting it with modern tourism and cultural activities."
- Officials will subsequently examine whether to develop the project through public investment or a Public-Private Partnership model, while a Joint Working Group will oversee conservation of the Town Hall, Press Building, and Park.
