Rasooli to Captain Afghanistan at Asian Games
Darwish Rasooli will lead a 15-man squad that includes six uncapped players and rewards strong domestic form, selectors said.
Top-Order batter Darwish Rasooli will captain Afghanistan's youthful 15-member squad at the 2026 Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, as the Afghanistan Cricket Board's National Selection Committee opted to rest several established stars.
The majority of the squad earned their spots following impressive performances in the recently concluded 11th edition of the Shpageeza Cricket League, with national selectors heavily rewarding standout performers.
Seam-Bowling all-rounder Ismat Alam returns after being named Player of the Tournament in the Shpageeza Cricket League, where he scored 294 runs and taking nine wickets; batter Mohammad Akram also earned selection.
Six players remain uncapped, but experienced internationals Karim Janat, Najibullah Zadran, and Nangeyalia Kharote provide necessary guidance; Kharote is the only member besides the captain with more than 10 international appearances.
Regular captain Rashid Khan and established players like Rahmanullah Gurbaz are excluded to facilitate this developmental opportunity, as the Asian Games campaign begins shortly after Afghanistan's three-match T20I series against India in Delhi.
