Daily Mirror Publisher Reach Cutting 220 Jobs in Editorial Overhaul

On Wednesday, Reach announced the closure of three news titles—AberdeenLive, KentLive, and GalwayBeo—cutting 220 editorial roles while creating around 60 new positions, resulting in a net loss of 160 jobs.
Chief content officer David Higgerson cited 'market position' in specific areas as the primary driver, noting the company faces declining Google search referral traffic and increased BBC competition that mirrors output up to 70% of the time.
Higgerson described the firm as being in "the middle of a mammoth shift in how audiences want content and journalism," with "active engaged time" becoming the company's north star metric by year-end.
To mitigate compulsory redundancies, Reach will "look for opportunities to redeploy colleagues" while Higgerson stated leadership previously reduced non-people budgets to "protect as many jobs as possible."
This move follows a major restructure last September where Reach cut more than 320 jobs, as the publisher faces significant financial headwinds with overall revenues down 9% and digital revenues falling 11.4%.
