Conman Claimed He Was Multi-Millionaire Based on Fifty Shades of Grey Character
He used fake cancer claims and luxury lies to take nearly $106,800 from four victims, police said.
On Thursday, Joseph Gibson, 35, was sentenced to three years and two months in prison at Bristol Crown Court after admitting four fraud charges, having swindled four victims out of £70,000 between 2020 and 2021.
Operating between 2020 and 2021, Gibson fabricated a persona as a wealthy Special Boat Service veteran worth £400 million, using Tinder to meet and deceive victims by falsely claiming he had cancer and needed money urgently.
Gibson sent fake hospital photographs to solicit cash, leaving one victim with just 93p in her account and a retired superyacht captain emotionally devastated, describing the impact as 'significant' in his victim statement.
Recorder Jaron Crooknorth described Gibson's claims as 'total fantasy,' noting the defendant promised £40,000 in savings but admitted in court he could only provide £15,000 toward victim compensation.
Gibson will appear for a Proceeds of Crime Act hearing in March to attempt asset recovery and repay victims, addressing the significant debt and loss of trust caused by his elaborate scheme.
