Coastal Fire Centre lifts Category 2 and 3 open fire prohibitions

Larger open burning and several devices will be allowed again, while municipalities can still keep local fire rules in place.

  • On Wednesday, the Wildfire Service will rescind all remaining Category 2 and Category 3 open-fire prohibitions throughout the Coastal Fire Centre, effective at noon on September 30.
  • The change permits larger-scale open burning previously restricted across the Coastal Fire Centre, excluding Haida Gwaii; provincial prohibitions apply primarily to Crown land outside of municipal boundaries.
  • Residents may now utilize binary exploding targets, fireworks, burn barrels, and carbonizers, as these activities are no longer prohibited by the Coastal Fire Centre following the rescission.
  • Restrictions apply to specific lands within municipalities, including parks, ecological reserves, and wildlife management areas, governed by the Park Act, Wildlife Act, and Private Managed Forest Land Act.
  • While provincial prohibitions are lifting, the Wildfire Service reminds residents that municipalities may maintain their own fire restrictions; residents should check local government bylaws before starting any open fire.
